The National Dahlia Collection (NDC) is a prized part of Winchester Growers, and as in previous years continued to deliver amazing displays at the two principle events in the horticultural calendar – the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) shows at Chelsea and Hampton Court.
2015 has been a very successful year with the NDC display winning Gold Medals at both shows.
Working closely with the Mexican Embassy, most especially at Chelsea, in support of their promotional year of co-operation between Mexico and the UK (MXUK 2015) the team created a theme based around dahlias country of origin, Mexico.
The Chelsea display was 18 x 10 metres, one of the largest in the Grand pavilion. The theme being Edward James’ surrealist garden at Las Pozas in Mexico with its towering pillars and archways, combined with native Mexican plants together with other exotic vegetation plants as a backdrop for over 40 varieties of dahlia, some 500 plants.
Hampton Court was a smaller display but as equally eye-catching, with a similar number of varieties, in more of an Homage to the Edward James garden, but this time packed full of colour.
Between these two shows a version of the display shown at Chelsea was taken to the ‘Garden Scotland’ event in Edinburgh where the team we delighted to achieve a Gold Medal for the Collection.
